Jakin Invasion: Whidbey Island

Trying to decide what to do with out-of-towners is always tough. What I enjoy might not be the same as what they like to do. What if the activity we plan is a total dud? What if we take them to an over-priced museum only to find out that half of the exhibits are broken? Oh wait...we already did that.

After striking out at the Future of Flight, we had to redeem ourselves. Since we were already in Mukilteo, we hopped right down to the ferry dock and took the ferry to Whidbey Island.

I love riding ferries. The novelty never wears off for me. The Jakins have never driven on a ferry before, and to my delight- they loved it! They thought it was the craziest thing ever!

After the boat ride, we had some amazing pizza at a little parlour in Langley. Mmmmm...I'm salivating just thinking about it. I don't even like pizza. Anyway...
After lunch, we walked down a long flight steps to the beach.

As we explored the beach, Rick (or was it Dale?) threw some driftwood in the water, because that's what men do. Out of nowhere, a dog comes bounding down the beach and immediately jumps in the water to fetch the wood.

Realizing that this log is way too big for his little mouth, the cute dog started whining for us to throw something a little more size-appropriate.

Then we realized that there was something not quite right about this dog. Was that a tennis ball stuck in it's throat?

The way it flapped around when he ran seemed so uncomfortable. I felt so bad for him. But this dog didn't have a care in the world. He was playing fetch. He was in his element.
As we turned to go back up the stairs, we realized the tide had come in. Whoops. Our wet feet were quickly forgotten when we heard the saddest whine ever. We turned around and there was "Tenny" (affectionately named according to his tennis ball-sized goiter.)

We gave it a couple more throws and then took off before Tenny could catch up with us.

Our last stop for the day was Deception Pass. Gorgeous. How is it that I've lived in Washington my whole life and never visited here? It was gorgeous! And we never got rained on. Every time we got out of our car, it stopped raining. Every time we got back in, the rain started again. We were lucky!

Walking across the bridge with kids was kinda freaky!

The Jakin's liked the view too. A little bit too much, perhaps?

Latter day saint voices... it rained every time we got in the car and stopped when we got out. Also, the dog that arrived out of nowhere. :) Thanks we had so much fun, you write way better than we do.

Deception Pass is the best! Did you walk down the trail to see the view from down below? Conor & I are always excited to walk down, but then we remember how out of shape we are on the way up... Love that place!
