The Day My Heart Broke.

The other night, Gwen and I were enjoying some one-on-one time while Fiona was napping. As we were talking, Gwen asked me a question...

"Mom", she said, "Do you remember before Fiona was in your belly?"

"Yes, I do."

"That's when I was happiest."

"You mean you were happier before Fiona was born?" I asked.

"Yes."

**Pause as I try to catch my heart as it sinks to the ground.**

"Is it because you don't get as much time with just me and daddy now?"

"Yeah," she said quietly.

"Don't you love Fiona?" I asked her.

"Yeah, sure I love her", she replied.

"What can I do to make you happier now?"

"Oh nothing", she said, "I'm still happy now. I was just happier then".

I then promised her that I would work harder to find more time to have mommy-daughter dates and that daddy would try to spend more time with her too.

Then on cue, Fiona woke up.

Gwen said, "Mom, don't get her."

"You know I have to. I can't just leave her there" I said. "Do you still want me to have more babies?"

"Oh yeah!"

"Don't forget that babies need my time too. When I have baby, that means a little less time for just you. How many more do you want me to have?"

Her reply? "182!"

It's so hard to spend equal amounts of time with all your kids... believe me I know. What a mature little thing Gwen is though to be able to voice that! You're a great mom and I think you're doing an awesome job with your kids. :) Ainsley had a hard time adjusting to sharing Mom and Dad too and still does.

although my heart would break with that comment too, i staunchly believe that a sibling is the very best gift you could ever give your child. and not giving them all the attention in the whole world is also a (hard) and important lesson and gift to your child. but you know that already. gwen is too smart for her own good!

Revealing, interesting, normal, and what a healthy conversation. It's so nice Gwen can be honest with you. I wonder what Sarah thought about you?

Corinne is spot-on, "A sibling is the very best gift you could ever give your child."

So many lessons to learn, and you ARE a great Mom. (Rick is an awesome Dad too. Love you!)

Wait till Fiona starts stealing clothes and boyfriends, then Gwen will really be feeling the blues :)
