Volcano Time

Our funny little girl is obsessed with volcanoes. She talks about them all the time. Our imaginary games often involve volcanoes. She even has Rick showing her volcano videos on Youtube.

Rick got her a Volcano Kit for Valentine's Day and we have had a lot of fun using it. The first time, though, Gwen was a little hesitant. She kept running away while Rick was adding the ingredients. I think she kept imagining molten lava exploding everywhere, but of course, it was a little less tame.

The kit instructed us to just mix baking soda, red dye, and water, but it didn't really do anything. It also said we could use dish washing soap to make it a little more bubbly. We ended up substituting vinegar for the water and it worked great!

Once Gwen warmed up to the idea, she wanted to do the volcano over and over again. Since then, we have pulled it out many times at her request and have done many lava colors- since we ran out of red dye pretty quickly!

Here is a video of our first attempt using water...

Here is a video of our second attempt using vinegar. Much better...

That is so cool! I'd totally want to make it explode again and again, too.
