It seems that we are starting to develop a new post-dinner tradition. As we start clearing the table, somehow the music gets turned on. Before you know it, we are having a little dance party right in the kitchen. By this time, it is dark outside, so we can totally see our reflections in the sliding glass door. Gwen loves to watch herself dance. She knows all sorts of dance moves, but her favorite still seems to be the "Booty Smack".
Gwen used to get really mad when we would play a song that she didn't want to hear. She is finally understanding the concept of taking turns (at least when it comes to music). When one song ends, she annouces whose turn it is to choose the next song.
My favorite thing about this the anticipation of what song she will choose. She comes up with some suprising things. She often makes up her own title to a song, so it is sometimes a guessing game. She really loves the Christmas song, "Stop the Calvary" but she calls it "Stomping". That one took me a long time to figure out.
The other day when it was her turn to choose, she asked for the song about the girl. I asked her what girl, and she said, "the one with the jacket." And then I asked, "the one with the short skirt and the long jacket?" And she said yes! We've only listened to this song one other time when she was around, but apparently she liked it.
I'm very fortunate that Gwen has developed a taste for our music. Although we love to sing fun children's songs together, once the ipod gets turned on, she is asking for The Killers, Damien Rice, Ben Folds, etc. Not having to listen to Baby Einstein soundtracks all day is really a sanity saver for me.
Recommendation: the next time doing the dinner dishes gets a little tedious, turn it into a dance party. The kitchen will be spotless in no time!

Is "Stop the Calvary" that one Christmas song that sounds like a bunch of vikings singing or something? I love that one.
