The Practical Jokester

We potty trained Gwen when she was about 2 and a half. She did great and we found success relatively quickly. The one thing we haven't mastered yet is night-time training. Not even close. Gwen wakes up every morning with a very full pull-up. The doctor has assured us that this is normal and she will do it when her body is ready.

To try and give Gwen some type of incentive, Rick made a little chart for Gwen. When she wakes up with a dry diaper, she gets to open a flap on the chart and under it there is a picture indicating some type of reward (a present, a treat, a trip to the park, etc). Of course, she has never really gotten to open and flap- until one day a few weeks ago...

Gwen came into our room in the morning. She was very excited because her diaper was dry. We double checked and she was right. After lavish praise, we went to her room and she lifted up a flap that revealed that she would get a present. I quickly went to my closet, found something from my secret stash and wrapped it up.

Later in the day, Gwen started laughing unexpectedly. I asked her what was so funny and she said, "You know how I had a dry diaper this morning? I took off my soggy one and put on a new one before I came to your room!"

Shocked, I began cracking up, but tried not too. I pointed out to Gwen that she had told a lie and her face fell. It was obvious that her intention wasn't to be deceitful, but to play a funny joke.

I agreed with her that it was indeed a funny joke, but not one that can be repeated. Next time she wakes up with a "dry" diaper, we will definitely be checking the garbage!

Haha! Little stinker! :) It's amazing how fast they learn how to be sneeky. At least she told you the truth - that proves that she was just trying to be silly and yet you were still able to teach her a lesson. :)

Looks like a good sense of humor runs in the family.

This is Melissa from Bothell now in OR! What a funny sneaky thing she did. I was suspicious that she really had been dry because my kids have pulled this stunt too. This might make you feel better...All 3 of my kiddos still wear a pull-up to bed. From the almost 11 year old to the 4 year old. It is very hereditary and my husband had issues up to his mission and my brother had issues for YEARS! We try not to make a big deal about it and assure them it is not their fault. It is hard for me but there are worse things I could deal with!
