Backyard Wildlife

When you live on a greenbelt, you never know who might wander over for a visit. So far we've had a bear, several deer, and a pheasant. Recently Rick and I have been discussing the coyotes we've heard howling at night.

On one day in particular, I was on the phone and Gwen who was over by the window yells, "Look Mom! Coyotes!"

Figuring she was just listening in on one of our recent conversations, I dismissed her comment and said, "No, it's probably just a cat."

"No Mommy, they are coyotes."

"It's probably the neighbor's dog."

"NO MOM! There are three coyotes!" Gwen yelled at me.

I finally got up and looked out the window. By golly, she was right! There were three young coyotes in our backyard. By the time I got my camera, one was gone and another one was back in the bushes. I quickly snapped a photo through the screen door. It's not very clear, but better than nothing. I wonder what type a furry friend we will encounter next? Hopefully something a little less fierce.

Gee... these are cute now, but give them a year or less, and they will be hardcore predators. Remember Bailey, Carolyn's doggie? Coyotes dragged him away. I think even small children are at risk.

Huh, I didn't even know coyotes lived in WA! I always assumed they were a southwest animal. We would often see them in Page when I was growing up and if a cat ever went missing, they always ended as coyote food. Better warn your neighbors. :)
